The Interview
What inspired you to start sculpting reborn dolls?
My reborning skills were not what I wished them to be. So I decided to try sculpting! I found my love!
How do you decide on the facial expressions and features of your sculpts?
The babies decide themselves. I try different expressions until the look is natural. When I get it correct, I can’t help smiling.
How do you ensure the proportions and details are as lifelike as possible?
My best tool is a ruler! I’m a stickler for measurement. I use grid apps and ensure things fit but I remember the human body is always imperfect.
How has the reborn doll industry changed since you started?
I started reborning in 2006. I’ve seen sculpts become more detailed in the past near 20 years. Collectors want more than a cute face. They want sweet ears and beautiful hands and feet. Accuracy is so important.
What’s the most meaningful reaction you’ve received from someone about your work?
Three times now I have been told my current sculpt looks just like their children as newborns. This touches my heart.
